“Cause Me to Hear”

One of the things that changes when a rebirth occurs in a soul is that a person begins to hear differently. The quiet mystery of rebirth is accompanied with a presence of God within. With Christ in the heart, the heart begins to hear something different. The child of God begins to notice a difference but often is not quite sure how to express it or talk about it but it’s there nonetheless.

This post is about hearing in the morning. When I wake, even after years of being a Christian, it is special to hear his voice. It comes through the Word or the Bible. It comes through seeing something and the heart hears God in it and responds. It comes a number of different ways. God has a lot to say about His voice. Jesus states succintly and clearly that his children hear his voice, because he is the shepherd who loves his sheep (John 10).

So this first few minutes of January 2nd, 2012, I woke with light in my eye. The waning moon was setting and Jupiter was nearby but already in the trees on the low ridge to the West of my home. It sure sounded like a wake-up call from the Lord to me, so I thanked Him and ran to get a sketch pad.  Through the window and from the safety of my warm room, this is what I saw:
It is a simple pencil drawing done quickly. I had to wake up enough to reverse my thinking: to make sure that light things were dark, and dark things were light. Then when a scan of the drawing is inverted, it shows the scene as it looked when I gazed outside the window.

Being very early in the morning on January 2, it reminded me of a scripture song that I still sing from Psalm 143. The first line is from verse 8: “Cause me to hear, thy loving kindness in the morning…”
           …and so I did.
