I want to show you a lesson in situation awareness from the heavens but extend the principle to a larger subject. Let us start as if you were observing with me in my front yard on a late Summer evening in Virginia. Let us say we are looking to the South. Using only your eyes, would see the Milky Way overhead–slicing the sky from North to South. Near the southern horizon we would be able to see the constellation Sagittarrius, which is also called the Teapot. If we sketched the area just above and to the West of it, this is what we would record:
Now we will walk over to a telescope that is fitted with a special video camera that is placed were an eyepiece would normally go. The sketch below shows the center of an object that is not detectable with our eyes and would be just a point on the sketch above.
So both views are of the night sky but show entirely different levels of detail and fields of view. The first is a huge field of view that is expansive and beautiful but with no detail of any point. The second is a tiny field of view with lots of detail in a very small area.
God is Perfect and Eternal. He is able to understand and comprehend the largest situation we can imagine but is also perfectly capable of seeing the smallest detail. Jesus Christ would touch the need of the smallest sinner but not lose sight of His eternal purpose to proclaim the Kingdom of God. His situation awareness includes the sight and understanding of the smallest of details of our lives but also includes the largest of eternal purposes in the Glory of God.
Remember the observations of the heavens? Each view is unique and has an entirely different field of view–one is huge; one is tiny; both views are in the same section of the sky. An experienced of observer understands the value of both views, yet they are vastly different. God is like that: He sees the larger picture of any situation because He is Eternal. But He also sees the detail of one life, because He is eternal. He sees both with equal and perfect sight and wisdom. His greatness goes further. He holds the beginning and the end, because He is beyond time, creating it just like He created mass and energy.
Consider these two verses: “Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is an everalasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. he will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” Isaiah 40:28-29 (NIV)
Then is He not able to keep those who call upon Him, guarding their souls through any circumstance at any time? How great is our God!
